Hi Dan. Thanks for your comments and your question. The answer to your question is NO, the literal act of breaking the bread into pieces is not something that must be imitated. When Jesus broke off pieces of the bread, that was simply the method He used to distribute that bread. He didn't give any instruction to anyone else to break off pieces of the bread. But obviously, somebody, at some point is going to have to break up the bread into pieces. The only other alternative would be for everyone to simply take a bite out of the entire loaf. But that's not a point that Jesus was making. Here are the words of Jesus that we are told to follow.. "“Take and eat.." That's it. No other instructions concerning HOW we take the bread. Just take it and eat it. I hope this helps. Please let me know. Thanks..

Thanks for the study! Is Jesus’ breaking the bread an example that must be followed? Some believe the bread must be broken by the server, some say it must be broken by the receiver, some say breaking the bread was just an “account of action” of Jesus’ visual example of his own body being broken, and some say it was simply a method of distribution.
Is physically breaking the bread an example that must be followed and if so, by whom?
Thanks again, Dan
