When Will The Rapture Happen

A lot of people are asking that.  I’m told that 334 times each month, people search the internet for the phrase..  “When will rapture happen?”  And an additional 11,813 times per month, people search for the phrase..  “What is the rapture?”  So maybe we should start by answering that question first.  What is “the rapture”?

What Is The Rapture

raptureThe rapture is a doctrine (a doctrine is simply a teaching) of many religious groups, teaching that certain persons will be “raptured” from the earth (snatched up from the earth)  and taken to heaven to be with God.  There are actually several definitions of the word “Rapture” and “Raptured”.  I’ll show you the most common ones.

Definitions of Rapture and Raptured

#1.  The state of being transported by a lofty emotion; ecstasy.

#2.  An expression of ecstatic feeling; ie, “raptures of joy”

#3.  (a)  The transporting of a person from one place to another, especially to heaven, by supernatural means.

         (b)  An event in the “eschatology” of certain Christian groups, in which believers in Christ will be taken to heaven, either prior to, or at the second coming of Jesus.

(Eschatology is the teaching of what happens at the end of time.  People have different views of what will happen at the end of time, and so we see many different “eschatology’s”.  However, If people would all just believe the bible, they’d all have the same view!)

Definition 3 (b)

This is the definition that applies to the scriptures, and to our question, and therefore this is the definition we will be talking about in answering the questions, “What is the Rapture”, and “When will the Rapture happen”.

Most people who use the term “Rapture”, believe that a select number of people will be taken up from the earth, and will be brought to heaven, while the people remaining on earth, will undergo a great tribulation.   But this scenario is not biblical at all.

imagesVFAML0A3Those who believe in “A Rapture”, commonly cite  Mat 24:40-42,  as teaching this doctrine.  Here’s what those verses say.. (Jesus speaking)

Then there shall be two men in the field; one shall be taken and the other will be left.  To women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.  Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.”

These verses do talk about believers being taken to heaven, but it speaks of this happening on the day the Lord comes.  And scripture is abundantly clear that the day the Lord returns, will be on the LAST day!  No other days will follow the LAST day.

Therefore, when will some people be “snatched up” from the earth, and be taken to heaven?  The answer is..  It will be at the end of time, on the LAST day, and not before.  And when that happens, (when Jesus returns and takes the faithful to heaven) there will be no earth left for people to remain on, because the heavens and the earth will have “passed away”.  Notice the verses that precede the ones already cited.

Mat 24:35-36,  “Heaven and earth WILL PASS AWAY, but My words shall not pass away.  But of that day and hour, (the day and hour that they pass away) no man knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

And in addition to that verse, we have  2 Peter 3, verse 10, which tells us..  “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”

No one knowsJesus says that the day and hour when the heavens and the earth shall pass away is known by NO ONE except the Father.  How many people have predicted when this will happen?  People really do make fools of themselves trying to predict what God has revealed to NO ONE.

More Scriptures About The End Of Time

Let me show you another couple verses that tell us what will happen at the end of time, when the heavens and earth “pass away”.

Jn 5:28-29,  “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which ALL who are in the graves (the phrase “in the graves” is a figure of speech referring to those who have died physically)   So then..  “..ALL who are in the graves (all who have died)  shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did good, to a resurrection of life, those who committed evil, to a resurrection of judgment.”

We are being told by God, that ALL who are in the graves, that means EVERYONE who has died, will be resurrected when Jesus returns.

And then God tells us in  1 Cor 15:51-53,  Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep (to sleep means to die), but we all shall be changed.”

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised, imperishable, and we shall be changed.”

“For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.”

1 Cor 15:50  reveals this to us,Now I say this brethren, that flesh and blood CANNOT inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.”

Since flesh and blood, which is temporary and perishable, cannot inherit heaven, which is eternal and spiritual, our bodies must be changed.  Otherwise no one could inherit heaven.

There will be NO ONE left on this earth after this great day!  On “the day of the Lord”, (when Christ returns) all souls will be raised.  The faithful will be raised to a resurrection of life, and the unfaithful will be raised to a resurrection of judgment and condemnation.  And then..  the heavens and the earth shall pass away”.

The word “Rapture” Is Not In The bible

I must point out that the word “Rapture” is not in the bible.  We see so much of that…  People using words NOT found in the bible, to try to describe what the bible says.  Why, oh why, can’t people just call bible things by bible names?  It would sure end a lot of confusion if they did.

If you have read the previous post titled  “How is Jesus God”,  you would have read about the word “Trinity”.  That’s another word that is not in the bible.  But people have tried to take God’s teaching about God the Father, and God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, and create their OWN words to “further define” what God has said.

do not addBut in doing so, they have actually “added to” the word of God, by saying things that God never said.  And in doing so, have caused much confusion, because they’ve “added to” God’s word, and now they have to “define” what they mean, and they get things all twisted around.  Here’s a good verse of scripture to remember…

1 Pet 4:11,  “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God !”  The “oracles of God, are the “utterances” of God.  In other words,  they are “The words of God”.

Maybe we need to look at God’s warnings about adding to His word.

Rev 22:18,  “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book; If anyone ADDS TO THEM, God will add to him, the plagues which are written in this book; And if anyone TAKES AWAY from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the “tree of life”, and from “the holy city”, which are written in this book.”

Since that warning is found in the final book of the bible, the book of Revelation, many people think it applies only to that book.  That’s not true!  Observe…

Prov 30:5-6,  “Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.  DO NOT ADD to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be proved to be a LIAR.”

Deut 4:2,  “You shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I am commanding you, nor TAKE AWAY from it, that you may KEEP the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you.”

Deut 12:32,  “Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to DO; You shall NOT ADD TO, NOR TAKE AWAY from it.”

God is not one to “mince words” is He?  When people insist on making up words to “redefine”, or to “further describe” what God has already said, they almost inevitably “Add To” the word of God.  God has told us exactly what He wants us to know.

DON’T TRY TO CHANGE IT !

Rapture And The End Of Time

So, although the word “Rapture” is not found in the bible, there is an event described in the bible that fits the definition that we have looked at.  Here’s the definition once again.

“An event in the eschatology of certain Christian groups, in which believers in Christ will be taken to heaven, either prior to, or at the second coming of Christ”.

Now let me say at this point, that the event foretold in the bible concerning this, is an event that will take place AT the second coming of Christ, and not before.  I’m going to give you the section of scripture that tells of this event, but first I want to point out a couple of things to help you understand what is being said.

In this scripture reading, the phrase, “those who are asleep” is used.  This refers to those who have died.  The scriptures repeatedly use the word “sleep” to refer to our condition after death.  Next, the phrase “In Jesus” is used.  To be “IN Jesus” is to be “in a covenant relationship” with Him, as the result of obeying His commands.  This is the same thing as being in “a saved condition”.

trust the wordNo matter what anyone else wants to believe, concerning what will happen at the end of time, these verses that we are about to read, tell you what GOD says will happen.

The End of Time / Christ’s Second Coming

1 Thess 4:13-18,  “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren about those who are asleep, (those who have died) that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope.”

“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him (with Jesus), those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. ”   (those who have died while in a covenant relation with Jesus, in other words, in a saved condition)

“For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, and remain until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep.”

“For the lord Himself will descend from heaven with a SHOUT, with the voice of the archangel of God, and the dead “in Christ” shall rise FIRST.”

“Then, we who are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, (“snatched up, so to speak) to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we shall always be with the Lord.

“Therefore, comfort one another with these words.”

Note These Three things

#1.  This passage deals ONLY with those who are “in Christ”.  The fate of those who are NOT “in Christ”, is not dealt with in these verses.  These words, are meant to be words of comfort to those who ARE “in Christ”.

#2.  At the second coming of Christ, the Lord will never set foot on this earth !   V-17  said,  “Then we who are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them, IN THE AIR, and thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

#3.  The gathering up of those who are “in Christ”, is the same event described in  1 Cor 15:20-26,  where it says that Christ,  “delivers up the kingdom to the God and Father..”

Let’s go ahead and read those verses too…

“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.”

“For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.”

“For as in Adam, all die, so also “in Christ”, all shall be made alive.”

But each in his own order; Christ, the first fruits, after that, those who “are Christ’s” at His coming.”

“Then comes the end, when He delivers up the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and authority and power.”

“For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.”

“The last enemy that will be abolished is death.”

imagesGL7IZDY8By means of the resurrection of the dead, Christ will have abolished “death”.  Those who are “In Christ”, make up His kingdom.  His kingdom is His church.  It is Christ’s church, and that church will be delivered up to God the Father, at the end of time.

Jesus said to the apostle Peter,  “I will build My church..”, and  “I will give you the keys to the kingdom..”   Mat 16:18-19  The kingdom and the church, are the same thing!

All those who are “In Christ”, will be “raptured” so to speak, “snatched up” and “raised to meet the Lord in the air”, and they will then be transported by Christ Himself, up to heaven to live with God; Christ Himself, being God.

THIS is what the bible says about the end of time, and about those who are “In Christ”, when the end of time arrives.

Do Not Add To The word Of God !

Any other “explanation”, or any other “Rapture Story”, is “Adding to The word Of God”.  The bible does not use the word ‘Rapture”.  The bible uses the word “Resurrection”.

The bible says, “The dead in Christ shall rise”.

The bible says, Then we who are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the air..”

The bible says, Then comes the end, when He delivers up the kingdom to the God and Father..”

The end is the END !  The end is not the beginning of a period of tribulation.  The END is not the beginning of a thousand year reign.  The end is the end!

Jesus Christ is the King over his Kingdom, which is His church.  And Jesus reigns now, in His kingdom.  And the bible says, “For He must reign until He has put all his enemies under His feet.  The last enemy that will be abolished is DEATH.”

The bible says, that the “Resurrection”, not the “rapture”, will be what abolishes DEATH.

The Bible also tells us these things..

study bible

The prophet Jeremiah wrote, in  Jeremiah 10:23,  “I know O’ Lord, that a man’s way is not in himself; Nor is it in a man, to direct his own steps,”

Since that is the case, would we be wise to NOT add to God’s word?

Wouldn’t it be wise to “let us speak as the oracles of God”?

Wouldn’t it be wise to “Call bible things by bible words”?

And wouldn’t it be wise, to allow God’s word, to do the explaining?

Thank You

  1. I am glad that you enlightened us with this post. I have been considering creating a blog or website related to empowerment, educating and discussion based on the Bible.

One concern I’ve had was people misunderstanding God’s word, so naturally I was drawn to your statement that “Maybe we need to look at God’s warnings about adding to His word.”

You hit the nail on the head.

Like you said, although Rapture is not found in the bible, there are many accounts to consider as we decipher the meaning of rapture and the reality that we see each day.

Out of curiosity, naturally, do you think your site gets more visitors from Christians? Do you think you get visitors who are not Christians?

    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hello Nerissa. thanks you for your comments. I think that mainly Christians visit the site, because they are the ones asking spiritual questions. Sadly, non-Christians don’t seem to care. There is more misunderstanding about God’s word than there is with anything else in the world. People seem to recognize their need to take the advice from a “professional” in worldly matters. But strangely, they don’t seem to realize their need to take the advice of God, in spiritual matters. Go figure that one out !

Recently one person said to me, “The bible is open for interpretation”. That’s exactly what Satan wants us to think. God has never said that His word is “open” for man’s own “interpretation”. God says exactly what He means, and He means exactly what He says. There’s no room for compromise. May we all look to God’s word fro our guidance. Thanks Nerissa.

  2. Hi Jim,

When will the rapture happen is a detailed and flowing post. I an a christian and believe one day Christ the Son of God will come for those the believe.

I am so glad you are getting the word out about Jesus Christ our Lord. Your post really defines what the bible says about the rapture and what it does not.

I look forward to additional posts on the Bible. Thank you for enlightening me on this subject.

    Regards,
    Tim

    1. Thanks Tim. It’s always great to hear from someone who appreciates God’s word. Jesus is coming, that’s for sure. But no one knows when. That’s why it’s so important that we remain ready always. That means remaining faithful to God’s word and DOING everything we are told. Faith and obedience, those are the only two things God has ever asked of anyone. God bless you Tim in your faith, and may we all keep growing spiritually.
